Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Laguna Niguel, CA

Total Budget: $3,000

Areas of Focus: Water and sanitation, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Providing Additional Learning Experiences for Third Graders in Laguna Niguel

Third graders in Laguna Niguel need a convenient resource in order to accurately complete their homework assignments. For the past several years, Laguna Niguel Rotarians have provided a dictionary to each of the 750 third graders in the Laguna Niguel public schools. The project is carried out during the month of October by a dozen or so Rotarian volunteers who meet for a "sticker" party to affix stickers displaying the Rotary logo to the dictionaries. A school visitation schedule is then developed and additional Rotarian volunteers distribute the dictionaries to the children. The thanks from the children is often expressed in the form of broad smiles as they receive their very own dictionary.

Arbor Day provides an educational opportunity for the children as they learn about the origin of Arbor Day and why it is observed in this country. Additionally, children also lean about conservation and why it is so important to project our environment. Each third grader is provided with a small drought resistant tree. Rotarians from the Laguna Niguel Rotary Club obtain the trees from a local nursery specializing in drought tolerant plans. Each small plant is watered and cared for by a Rotarian until it can be transported to one of the seven Laguna Niguel Elementary Schools. Every plant has an insert in the package displaying the Rotary logo and containing a description of the plant and care instructions. Children look forward to receiving these small plants and Rotarians frequently hear very positive comments and appreciation from the parents and teachers.
