Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise, Idaho

Total Budget: $1,200

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Providing dictionaries to third grade students at low-income Boise, Idaho area schools

Funds will be used to purchase "A Student's Dictionary" from dictionaryproject.org. Dictionaries will the distributed to third graders in five lower-income elementary schools of the West Ada school district of Idaho. In presenting the dictionaries to these 450 students members will interact with them and reinforce the importance of education. We explain to the students what Rotary is, how the organization affects the lives of its members and the community at large. More than just a dictionary, these almanacs are for some of these students the only book they can call their own. The teachers tell us that the material in the books is integrated into lesson plans so that the children become familiar with new words, learn more about the world outside their borders and develop a curiosity about previously unknown topics. The club will have a coordinator who makes contact with the schools to determine the number of dictionaries required in order to provide one dictionary per 3rd grade student, coordinate the distribution date for each school and order the dictionaries from the Dictionary Project organization. Upon receipt, several members will place Rotary bookplates in the front of the dictionaries. The bookplates will explain the community service mission of Rotary and include the four-way test. 90% of the club will participate in handing out the dictionaries at the schools and introducing the students to some basic information contained in them. We will take the opportunity to relate the members' professions and how education played an important role in obtaining jobs or starting businesses. Our goal is to complete the distributions prior to Thanksgiving break. Anticipated cost is $1,200.
