Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Orange County

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Scholarships

Summary: Four $1,000 Scholarships For Olive Crest Students to attend a Jr. College/University From Sept. 2015 to June 2016.

The Newport-Irvine Rotary Club continues their supportive 15th year relationship with Olive Crest of Orange County, whose mission is to Prevent Child Abuse, Treating & Educating at-risk children, and Preserving the family.

Several of the available Olive Crest students are presently attending local Jr. Colleges with one student graduating from High School this June. Each Student is required to submit the Newport-Irvine Application that includes a short paragraph about themselves and the importance of pursuing higher education.

Both NIRC's $2,000 contribution and District 5320's Matching Grant Funds are scheduled to be deposited in early August directly into The Newport-Irvine Rotary Foundation 501(c)(3) Account. The funds for each student become available for payment of tuition, lab fees, books, living expenses, etc. during the 2015-16 school year.

Eight NIRC members will be divided into two groups to review individual applications and conduct interviews. Final selection of the four candidates will be eligible to attend a College or University beginning with the 2015 September Semester.

Each of the four successful scholarship students will be recognized at NIRC's August 20th Noon weekly meeting. Following that meeting, each of the four students selected will be assigned with a Rotarian mentor who will meet with their student in late November regarding their educational progress and offering assistance as needed. 2016 meetings will be scheduled for May during the 2016 Spring semester.

Each of the four students is welcome as a Guest of the Club to attend NIRC's weekly Thursday Noon meeting at the UCI University Club on Campus located at 801 E. Peltason Drive, Irvine, CA 92627.

In addition, our four students are encouraged to attend NIRC's 15th Annual Christmas Party scheduled for December 13th. There they will have an opportunity to share with the 50 Olive Crest students the importance of continuing their education. Also attending will be 20 NIRC Rotarians & Spouses, 12 UCI-Rotaract Students, 10 Olive Crest Supervisors and Managers.

Publicity for these four Olive Crest Scholarships will be submitted by NIRC for publication in Olive Crest's Quarterly Magazine which is mailed to over 500 Orange County sponsors.

Included is a photo and article submitted for publication for three 2014 Olive Crest Graduates who each received a $1,000 NIRC Scholarship awarded on June 12, 2014. (No District 5320 matching funds used.)
