Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Nampa, Idaho

Total Budget: $8,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Dictionaries to 3rd and 4th grade in Nampa, Idaho

Traditionally, Nampa Rotary has distributed dictionaries to the 3rd graders in our community. Last year, we decided to determine if the dictionary project was still considered a valuable project for the students. We contacted the Nampa School District, who interviewed both the principals and teachers and the response was overwhelmingly in support of the dictionary project. We re-evaluated the distribution time frame and with the school district we determined that it would be more appropriate to deliver the dictionaries in September of the academic year. Since our data came to us in the Spring of the current year, we did not deliver dictionaries to the 3rd grade this year. The grant stipulates two grade levels so we can ensure that the third graders of this current year will also receive a dictionary as they transition into 4th grade. Nampa Rotary will have a member coordinator who will contact Nampa School District, Charter Schools, and private schools in our community and we will plan to deliver after Labor Day in September. Once the dictionaries are secured from dictionaryproject.com, the club will affix bookplates into each dictionary with the four way test and a place for the student to place their name. Rotarians will be trained by the coordinator on the process of delivery to the students and how to engage the students about Rotary, literacy, the use of the dictionary, and the four way test. It is anticipated that all dictionaries will be delivered by October 1st, 2015. We plan to leave a dictionary with each teacher in order for them to use in their lessons plans over the academic year.
