Summary: A piano enclosed in a bus shelter will be open for all to play and enjoy, snack bags will help fill a physical gap.
Whitehorse is a very cultural and socially-conscious city. The public piano will be open for people to come in any time during the summer to play - especially tourists and music students. It will be located on Main Street downtown. The piano and stool have already been secured. The bus shelter public piano will be modeled after similar projects in Red Deer and other major cities in Canada and the U.S. This project is being undertaken in partnership with the City of Whitehorse who will provide space for the shelter on the street and store it in off-season. The grant will help us purchase the special-order bus shelter and signage. The piano project will be ready for spring/summer 2016. It has already been well-received by the Mayor and will become a draw and treat for visitors and musically adept locals alike. Transportation of the bus shelter will be provided by a local trucking company. Members will be involved in installing the shelter and decorating it. We will hold a public event to launch it in the late spring.
Public pianos are now located around the world. London, Montreal, Los Angeles, Hanover, NH to name a few. They have caught on and are bringing the joy of music to countless people.
