The goal of our program is to transport 881 students to the Newport Sea Base and provide volunteers to assist in their S.T.E.M Based Field Trip Program and sponsor an Adaptive Sailing Program for our veterans with disabilities and Special Olympic athletes.
Field Trip Highlights for the Sea Base S.T.E.M Based Field Trip Program
The Program is based on California Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
The 4-hour program features grade appropriate activities including an educational harbor cruise around scenic Newport Beach and an engaging classroom lesson focusing on a variety of maritime subjects supporting
S.T.E.M., Life Science, Language Arts, Investigation and History Skills.
Activities Include:
• Shark Dissection and Shark Fishing
• Design, Build and Sail Mini Catamaran Boats
• Underwater Camera and Microscopes Investigation
• City Pollution and Water Filter Discovery
• Harbor Excursion and Sea/Bird Life Exploration
Rotarians are involved in all phases of this project. First we have cultivated relationships with the school districts to make projects like this possible. Second we will attend all trips, encouraging our new members in particular, to have a first hand look by serving as adult chaperones, and encouraging the children to have fun and learn. We currently have one meeting a year at the Sea Base and have sponsored this successful program for over five years!
Adaptive Sailing Program
Sailing offers unique therapy: personal discovery, self-confidence and freedom. Sailing is a wonderful complement to our social fabric, and our local climate offers year round access.
Enormous community resources are devoted to access our local waters. However, for sailing programs to successfully serve people with disabilities, we need the best tools and training modern technology has to offer: versatile by design, "adaptive" and accessible sailboats.
We will work with The Sea Base, as well as other organizations in California to promote Adaptive Sailing. We will also use this as a recruiting tool for our club and satellite club. Below is a preliminary schedule of events.
