How the Project will meet those in Need:
Forty to Fifty percent of all students in Tustin Unified School District live in poverty. Many of these students meet the requirements to attend universities; however they struggle to pay tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and fees. These scholarships allow students to attend college who would be otherwise unable to attend. Scholarships will be distributed to all four high schools in the Tustin Unified School District.
Timeline:
Applications will be distributed on-line during the month of March. Counselors at each of the high schools will be contacted during that month to help inform students of the process. A selection committee of three Rotarians will review applications and interview candidates during the month of May. Awards will be presented a a regular meeting of the Tustin/Santa Ana Rotary Club on the first Thursday in June. Recipients will also be recognized at their schools' Senior Awards Nights or graduation in June.
Budget:
Total budget for the project is $4,500 that will provide each of the four students with a $1,000 scholarship. $500 will provide lunches for the students, parents, counselors and administrators. The Tustin/Santa Ana Rotary Club has budgeted $2,250.00 and requests a $2,250 match from District 5320. Scholarship disbursements as we did in 2015 will be disbursed from the Tustin/Santa Ana Club Foundation a 501 (c) 3 organization.
How Club Members will be included:
1. Create an on-line scholarship form
2. Contact the school to discuss the scholarship with counselors and other staff, and to arrange for a space and time to meet the applicants.
3. Review all applications to select those candidates who will receive an interview.
4. Interview candidates and select winners.
5. Present the awards at a regularly scheduled club meeting.
6. Make a presentation to the student at their schools' Award Night or graduation.
A total of approximately 18 Rotarians are involved throughout the process.
Sustainability:
The Club has provided scholarships for several years and will continue to do so into the future. This match allows the Club to increase the scholarship amounts.
Advertising/Community Outreach:
Advertising is done through the high schools for candidates. Interacters at each of the high schools also will help to spread the word of scholarships' availability. The Club features winners in our Newsletter and a press release to the Tustin News.
