In the third grade, third graders are expected to begin Reference work, according to CA common core standards for Math and Literacy.
The Rotary Club of Laguna Beach will provide a dictionary to every third grade student (approximately 250) for his or her Reference learning. The project will also provide 14-15 iPad-type Chrome Book Pads to a fifth-grade classroom to be used by students who do not have a device of their own; to encourage English language literacy and reading through the use of the Chrome Book Pads; and to ensure that the students classroom is teaching its students how to use relevant and up-to-date technology.
Teachers will provide 1-on-1 instruction using the devices to access to electronic textbooks, primary research sources, and for analysis and validation of information and sources, which reinforce the CA Common Core standards. The Rotary Club of Laguna Beach and our Interact Club of Laguna Beach student volunteers, will place decals in each dictionary and each Chrome Book Pad, and will use the District's buying power to purchase all supplies at reduced prices.
All project funds go directly to the purchases of the dictionaries and the Chrome Book Pads. Over 500 students will be assisted by the project. By providing these Chrome Book Pads to the classroom, we are bringing new technology to the classroom, which the school district has confirmed they would otherwise be unable to provide for their students. Additionally, many underprivileged students in the Laguna Beach Unified School District are unable to afford their own personal devices, to be used for research and educational enrichment. By providing a classroom with a Chrome Book Pad, the Rotary Club of Laguna Beach is ensuring that those students who could not otherwise afford access to advanced pieces of technology are able to access those devices safely and with the assistance of a teacher. We are also excited to present every 3rd Grade with their very own dictionary, because for many students, it is their first research tool that they will be able to take home and use on their own, and learn from throughout the rest of their lives.
