Project Description
The Boys and Girls Club of Fullerton maintains and operates a city owned Youth Park at 386 Truslow Ave in Fullerton that was established over 60 years ago by the Kiwanis club in Fullerton. Three independent groups, the Boys & Girls club, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts each have operations and run programs benefitting the youth of Fullerton. The Boys & Girls teen center is headquartered there, helping hundreds of kids with school homework, access to a computer lab, organized activities, music, cooking and other supervised activities. Boy Scout Troop 93 operates one of the largest packs in the area, currently serving over 120 youth. The Girl scouts also use the park for many activities through the year. These three groups share the facilities and over the course of the year, many hundreds of kids use and benefit from the programs.
The project is to completely renovate the kitchen and community room in the Girl Scout house. The fixtures date from the original construction of the house in the early 1970's, which was constructed by the Army Corp of Engineers. It has been well maintained over the years, but is in need of a complete renovation. In the Kitchen, the existing cabinets, lighting and most appliances will be removed (the oven is in decent shape and will be retained). New appliances, cabinets and LED lighting will be installed. Sunrise Rotary will take the lead in designing and organizing the work, but other volunteers from outside of Rotary will also help. In addition to the kitchen remodel, the next door room is the buildings main gathering space. It is also in need of work and modern LED lighting will be installed. Both rooms will get fresh coats of paint and new floors.
The components have been priced out and we estimate the total project to be $7,000. The component price estimate follows. Work will take place primarily in the fall of 2015, over 4 or 5 successive weekends. The project will be complete by March of 2016. Fullerton Sunrise will do the demo, design and plan the placement of appliances and cabinets and order all of the items. We have already received offers for "at cost" items like counter tops. Professional expertise will be used to make sure wiring, and plumbing installation are done right and up to code. Sunrise Rotary will do the final painting and installation of lighting fixtures. Our club has a track record of success - completing projects like this in the past.
This project will not only update some aging facilities, but it will be an example of a community wide effort where several organizations work together for the benefit of our youth. The youth park is in a poor area of town and an investment of this kind will help show the community that we can work together for the common good.
Fullerton Sunrise Rotary had a very successful Hoedown and was able to raise the needed funds for this project from that fundraiser.
