Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Denton

Total Budget: $6,550

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: A dictionary provided to every third grader, each third grade teacher and elementary school principal in the Denton Independent School District and the Lake Dallas School District

This project started for the third graders in the Denton (Texas)Independent School District back in school year 2006/07. Those first students who received a dictionary as a third grader are slated to graduate this coming school year. Each year each third grader in the Denton ISD has received a dictionary, with us adding in 2013/14 the Lake Dallas School district. Nearly our entire club gets behind this and goes to at least one presentation and distribution program and many going to several schools each year. We also have received the support of one or our local banks, Bank United Rayzor Ranch branch, for a place to store the boxes of dictionaries that come in as well as placing the Rotary Club labels in each book with includes the four-way test. In spite of the increased use of technology, the students still are thrilled to receive the book, and each presentation includes a brief history of who we are as rotary, the four-way test, and using the dictionary to look up some words from the four-way test. We also make sure each third grade teacher and the principal of the elementary school receive a current copy of the book. Our goal is to get the dictionaries out to every student before the break in December so they all have one for when the start learning how to use reference materials in the spring. Denton has a wide range of students from all economic areas. For several students, this is often the first book they own. Many come up to tell us that their older sibling still has the book received when they were in third grade.
