This past May, I went with a group of my friends on a trip to Nicaragua to explore, learn and give back to the local community through art and education. What we found was more than a need for school supplies and repairs, but a need for the most important resource, clean water. We met Stu, a local engineer with over 12 years of experience building clean water systems and wells for rural areas of Central America. Stu is working to help fix the dried well at El Tamborcito school where we went to volunteer, but he needs our help. The well will provide water to the children to drink as well as the community of El Transito who now walk 2 miles to the closest river for contaminated water. When we realized this we all decided we would make it our mission to get the funds necessary to bring clean water to the small village.
We created a GoFundMe Acct with a goal of raising $1,000 so they can start Phase 1 before the rainy season begins and we have already raised $601.00 by 18 people in 21 days! We also created a YouTube video with photos and videos of our trip with an interview from Stu so you can e-meet him yourself. He's a wonderful person. Please see the links below.
Stu has done the research and has the tools and team ready to start digging.
Phase 1 - We need to hand dig deeper and that will take the most time.
Phase 2- Once its deep enough we are going to clean everything inside and put some gravel, pump dirty water out and treat the new water so it is drinkable.
Phase 3 - Make a sealed concrete base on top, set the rope pump for easy water access.
Phase 4 - Health and hygiene education by meeting with the kids and personnel of the school to teach them about hand washing and how to take care of the well.
We will need a total of $3,500 for the water project explained above. But my group of friends has a total fundraising goal of $9,000.
The other funds will be for restoring the swing set, soccer goals, balls, painting the school, getting books, installing a flag pole and getting them a flag to help instill more pride in their community.
Givebackpackers & Fortune421 are the companies my friends, Lindsay Hawley and Jason Herrick, own and represent. Their companies will each be selling apparel on their respective websites inspired by our trip with the majority of the proceeds going toward our project. We also plan to host a fundraising fashion show sometime in Mid-August.
We hope to plan our trip back to Nicaragua for September or October 2015. We expect to complete the project including the training and maintenance phase within 4 months from start. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like additional information.
