Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Mineral Wells, TX

Total Budget: $3,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Mineral Wells

Backpack Buddies Mineral Wells started in 2010 by the First United Methodist Church and is focused on eliminating childhood hunger in our community. The program feeds 185 to 190 children per week at 5 different schools (includes three elementary schools, the Junior High and High Schools).

The program is completely supported by the community. The average cost per child for the school year is $108.

The program begins after the first week of school when the teachers and counselors have identified at-risk children. Back Pack Buddies provides children from food-insecure homes with healthy weekend meals during the school year.

Our club members would participate in the preparation of the back packs on a rotating basis.

Several club members and their spouses attended a "social" at Wes-Tex Vending for the purpose of packing as many bags as possible for students who need food during the weekend. The club packed over 300 bags before they ran out of supplies.
