Rotary Club: Nome Project Title: East End Park 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? In summer 2022 the pavilion at East End Park received a new roof. Initially we thought we could simply repair the old roof, but once we dug deeper, we quickly learned most of the nails had rusted through and the entire metal roof needed to be replaced. And it’s a good thing, because in September 2022, western Alaska was hit by typhoon Merbok, the largest storm to hit the region in nearly 30 years. The new roof weathered the storm just fine. However, the parking lot received extensive water erosion damage, and money has been prepaid to have loads of gravel brought in just as soon as spring break up occurs. We also have an outstanding commitment for an in-kind donation for sand for the volleyball court and a new volleyball net, as the old net did not survive the storm. We hope that buy mid-June 2023, the park will be fully functional once again. The second part of this grant is a book project with the Inupiaq Immersion classroom at Nome elementary school. Each student helped write pages for a book in Inupiaq, and we helped pay to publish it. Most students in Nome Public Schools are low income - so this generous financial support ensures all students receive a copy of the book they helped publish. 2. How many people benefited from this project? The entire community of Nome. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? East End Park is used by Norton Sound Health Corporation when they operate their Summersize program. This program brings college internships from the lower 48 and focuses on community health, diabetes prevention, pediatric nutrition, and nutrition programming. Approximately 125 Nome elementary students participate each year during the months of June and July. East End Park is used by families for birthday parties and get togethers (on the few sunny and warm days each year) and is often used as a meeting spot for local athletic races and dog sled races during the winter. Supporting literacy, specifically a culturally relevant immersion program, is a big priority for the Nome Rotary Club and we get a broad amount of support from the community in this endeavor. There are approximately 50 kindergarteners and 1st grade students in the two Inupiaq immersion classrooms. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 10 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarian Charlie and his team did the physical work of replacing the roof. Other Rotarians helped do annual clean up at the park and set up the volleyball net in May and again in early September. At least one Rotarian volunteered in the immersion classroom during the school year. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? 7. Income
