Project Title: Thok-Naath Cultural Program

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The Thok-Naath project is a program to teach children that came to the United States or children born to parents that recently immigrated to the US from South Sudan.

Having a strong cultural identity is important, especially when the differences in lifestyles from old to new are great. The South Sudanese have experienced difficulties due to language, education and racial biases.

This program continues a program that was started years ago by the Jarweng Education Development as a summer program to educate the children on their native language (speaking, reading & writing), history and culture. The adults often prepare meals that common in South Sudan.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 30 to 50

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The Sudanese Americans living San Diego County trying to keep their native language and cultural alive here by teaching their children. The children who benefited from this program suported by our club before covid interrupted, have progressed in their learning. They display greater confidence in who they are with this cultural background. During the past few years as the economy and jobs were adversely effected, the poorer communities were effected disproportionately. This program is so important as it gives hope to these children growing up is a foreign environment.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Jack Confrey and Dan Hazel attended the 5340 training and wrote the grant request. Dan presented to the local club reminding them of the 2019 projects and a club visit by one of the families. Thomas Nyang, one of our members and a native of South Sudan was the project head and worked with the other community leaders to organize the classes, transportation and feedings. Dan worked with Thomas throughout the program on videos and print needs.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Due to the unavailability of the South Sudanese Community Center this year the program was moved to the American Sudanese Presbyterian Church, Orange Ave., San Diego who provided classroom and recreation space.
