Project Title: Vulnerable Community Support


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

PROJECT: Served two regions in Kenya.

Machakos: MITI training center, it provided office and storage space, seedling nursery material for sensitive plants, water supply and water storage capacity improvement, training on business plan, seedlings grafting, organic farming, drip irrigation education and crop value addition in light of climate change. It further enhanced training on financial literacy and leadership. Paul Mue Foundation, a grassroot licensed Non-Governmental-Organization (NGO) in Kenya provided skilled trainer and will continue to work with MITI center for sustainability. Those trained are tasked with training others.

Taita: The grant provided shelter with sanitation for women who are in artisanal mining within Tsavo national park, rain water harvesting and improved water storage for the shelter. It additionally provided training on: Business plan, Group dynamics, table banking and mining safety.

This project was funded by Rotary District 5340, Rotary Club of El Cajon Sunset and partners.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Machakos: 68. Taita: 150.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Machakos: Unemployed youth, single mothers and motivated adults. Beneficiaries picked up lifelong skills that are useful in self-employment while addressing food security and climate change. There existed a gap in skill and through training the need was met. Upcoming recruits will benefit from established training and educational structure.

Taita: Vulnerable women in artisanal mining inside Tsavo national park benefited. A protective shelter was established.

Shelter, sanitation, water harvesting, and storage, solar light and training were achieved.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 17

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians: Fundraised for the project.

Self-funded two trips from US to Kenya and promoted Rotary fellowship.

Provided planning and implementation guidance.

RC El Cajon Sunset wired funds to project site and paid wire fees.

Created awareness of existing challenges and provided solutions for them. Challenges of unemployed youth, single mothers and vulnerable mining community were addressed.

Provided project final report, documentation and pictures.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Paul Mue Foundation, staff implemented the project. Volunteered in teaching and sustainability monitoring.
