District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2022-23

Rotary Club: Oceanside

Project Title: Oceanside Youth Development

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Increase literacy and cultural development for children grades K-12 in Oceanside’s disadvantaged Crown Heights area by providing books, reading and school attendance incentives, mentorship, leadership development, and a path to attending college. Funds were donated to Mission Elementary School, Laurel Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School and Oceanside High School (OHS) for school library books. Funds were also donated to OHS for learning incentives, including school memorabilia and gift cards to restaurants to be given by school administrators to students who improved their performance in school throughout the year. Funds were donated to the non-profit Real Hearts which serves disadvantaged youth in the Crown Heights area, and to the non-profit North County Lifeline for their stay-in-school program for kids in Crown Heights. Two mentorship trips were also taken for middle-school kids: one to Mira Costa College (4 kids and 3 Rotarians) for a campus tour, the play "Addams Family" and out to dinner afterward; the other was a train trip to the Midway Museum in San Diego and back and dinner afterward (note that the Midway Museum Trip wll be in April or May due to scheduling conflicts with the school - estimated cost is included in the total expenses for 10 people (6-7 kids and 3-4 Rotarians) train tickets and dinner expense.

2. How many people benefited from this project? All students at the school libraries (approximately 3000 students), approximately 100 students who recieve learning incentive awards, and up to 15 OHS graduates who receive the $50 lei graduation incentivs, and 10 middle school children who went on the mentorship trips

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Beneficiaries were disadvantaged children from K-12 in Oceanside who live in Crown Heights and the surrounding area. Our primary focus for this grant is on the need to encourage children (K-12th grade) to increase literacy and cultural development, develop leadership skills, envision a pathway to attending college, and avoid gang involvement and gain the education they need to break the cycle of poverty and violence in this local area. Administrators from all the schools have told us that some of their students have no access to books at home: their only exposure to reading is at school and with library book which this grant provides. Administrators have also told us that students' grades improve after the mentorship trips. And the learning incentives at OHS and through North County Lifeline have proven to be effective in keeping kids at school and improving their grades.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 10-12

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians accompanied kids on two mentorship trips. In these casual settings, each Rotarian makes an effort to befriend and engage the youngsters, giving them a positive role model and someone to talk to and share ideas and feelings. After each event the Rotarian and some of the young guests are responsible for presenting a program at Oceanside Rotary explaining what took place and how the event affected them.

Rotarians also participate in the lei presentation ceremony for graduates from the NC Lifeline stay-in-school program, and some of those students come to one of our meetings wearing the leis and talk about what it means to them.

Our club's youth committee members also coordinate the grant activities with our club and club foundation funded activities for youth.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

North County Lifeline is a non-profit that serves the Crown Heighs community and one of their programs is a stay-in-school program - they make leis for OHS graduates from their program out of 50 $1 bills as incentives for graduation, and this grant provides the funding for the leis.

Real Hearts serves disadvantaged youth in the area, and they provide support for food insecurity, learning objectives, and basic support for family needs.
