Rotary Club: North County San Diego-Route 78 Project Title: Bilingual Books for kids 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? I purchased a total of 2790 bilingual books from Award Winning Author Ramona Moreno Winner: 2400 books (60 Boxes) of Lucas & His Loco Beans: A Bilingual Tale of the Mexican Jumping Bean; 160 (4 Boxes) of The Wooden Bowl: El Bol de Madera; 180 (6 Boxes) of Freaky Food From Around the World: Platillos Sorprendentes de Todo el Mundo; 50 books (1 box) of It’s Okay to Be Different, Esta Bien Ser Diferente! (all of which are A Brainstorm 3000 Publication). Since then, Education Begins in the Home has participated in 22 events throughout North County San Diego. 1/26 – Fallbrook Food Pantry 1/29 - Escondido HHSA site with Universidad Popular (UP) – Covid Vaccinations 2/5 - Escondido HHSA site with UP – Covid Vaccinations 2/9 - Restock 3 Lil Libraries at the 3 Oceanside Resource Centers 2/10 - Grapevine Elementary (VUSD) Festival 2/13 - Provided books to the 1st Congregational Church in Escondido for their book giveaway 2/26 – Escondido HHSA site with UP – Covid Vaccinations 2/27 – Libby Elementary (OUSD) Community School Library 3/1 - Jefferson Middle School (OUSD) Community School Library 3/4 - Vista Community Clinic Dental Fair 3/7 - Pauma Community Center (Pauma) Food & Book Distribution w/UP 3/9 - Major General Murray High School (VUSD) Festival 3/12 – Escondido HHSA site w/UP 3/14 – Fallbrook A Leer book donation 3/16 – Fallbrook Food Pantry 3/16 – Alta Vista High School (VUSD) Festival 3/18 – MAAC Parent Summit – Vista 3/19 – Escondido HHSA site w/UP – Covid Vaccinations 3/21 – 2nd Fallbrook A Leer book donation 3/26 – Escondido HHSA site w/UP – Covid Vaccinations 3/29 – Bonsall West Elementary School (Bonsall USD) STREAM event 4/2 - Escondido HHSA site w/UP – Covid Vaccinations. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 2.) My Team of Volunteers took 5-30 books to each event except for the Fallbrook A Leer event (70 each time) and 70 to the MAAC Summit 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Children were the beneficiaries as the majority of books taken to each event was directed at children There is an increased demand for bilingual books by both English and Spanish readers. Students read the book in their language and then read or see how it’s written in the second language, helping them to become bilingual. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 4.) 2 Rotarians participated at a couple of the events. 1 Rotarian at the majority of the events. 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. We spoke to the parents about the importance of reading and the importance of learning/reading and speaking more than 1 language. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? 7.
