Project Description

On two separate Saturdays, Nov. 11, 2023 and Mar. 2, 2024 members from Del Mar Solana Beach Rotary met at Just in Time for Foster Youth's first home warehouse/distribution center in Mission Gorge at 8:00 am.

On each day, six (TOTAL 12) JIT Youth met with two Rotary Club members to review their "shopping list." This was the first time these youth were able to select personal items for their first home. We shopped for EVERYTHING needed to move into a new home--beds, dressers dining tables, linens, dishes, glasses, etc.

Each team consistd of:

Two shoppers

Two movers

Two drivers

Teams were color coded and items selected by the JIT youth were tagged with corresponding colored tape.

Shoppers walked the warehouse with JIT Youth.

Movers moved items our of the warehouse to a staging area.

Drivers and movers loaded items into vans, trucks, etc.

Movers and drivers went to the new home and unloaded everything. With the JIT Youth they placed new home furnishings in an appropriate location. The new homes were located from South Bay to Clairmont.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 12 JIT Foster Youth benefited, but our members also benefited.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries were 12 individual youth, 18 or older who had aged out of the Foster program and were on their own. Most were truly alone except for friends.

To qualify as recipients, the youth were required to be employed, and were required to have completed JIT's financial education, budgeting, goal setting etc.

For many of them this was the first time they had their own bed or towels or sheets. Many of the JIT Youth who go through the classes, go on to college or a meaningful career and are committed to giving back to the community. Many actually go to work for JIT to help other Foster Youth.

The humanitarian need met was straignt off of Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs. First basic needs--sheltler, food, water and then physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.

2. With JIT Youth, our shoppers grabbed a cart and methodically went up and down the aisles of the distribution center filling it with all things needed to live Independently.

3. Movers loaded all into trucks and vans.

4. Movders and drivers met the JIT Youth at their firsr home and unloaded and set up furnishings.
