Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: District 9370

Total Budget: $59,162

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

To provide safe clean water for sanitation and drinking purposes for the children and minders, (guardians), helpers of iKhethelo Children's Village - previously known as Makaphutu Children't Village in the rural areas bordering Ethekwini in Kwazula Natal, South Africa. The Village consists of a number of homes, each of which houses a number of orphans plus a minder, (guardian), who feeds and cares for them. The village also arranges their clothing and schooling, etc. The Village also serves as a key training centre and hub for the local community and their NGO's. Water is required for consumption and sanitation purposes. The existing system is both erratic, with consistent breakdowns in the supply pipeline which is detrimental to the children's health and well being.

This Global Grant has been finalised and the Final Report accepted by TRF on 29 August 2017. The project has had a major benefit for iKhethelo Childrens Village in that the consistent water supply has eliminated the need to find ongoing solution for the previous erratic water supply thereby improving the Health benefits for the children An additional benefit is the financial savings which can be applied more productively elsewhere.
