The project seeks to arrange open heart surgery, free of cost to children, infants and newborns from economically disadvantaged families suffering from congenital heart diseases, who cannot afford the cost of open heart surgery in order to cure their heart disease and enable them to pursue a healthy life thereafter. Beneficiaries will be selected by Rotary Club of Mumbai Green City and heart surgery will be arranged for them at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Research Institute (Kokilaben hospital).
Each operation will cost at an average of around Rs 1.0 lac. Through this grant funds we will be able to conduct operations for around 32 children. Through this proposed grant project we will provide a quality life to children suffering from heart ailments by arranging heart surgery with best available specialists at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Research Institute.
The Rotary clubs in our district has successfully done approximately 150 such surgeries since last 4 years at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Research Institute. Kokilaben hospital is a state of the art hospital that has a separate pediatrics intensive cardiac unit with specialized doctors and nurses for treating CHD children and has best doctors for such surgeries. Kokilaben hospital has agreed to do the surgeries at the discounted rate negotiated with them.
Our club (Host Club) will arrange preliminary screening of the children to ensure that children selected for surgery are suitable for undergoing heart surgery to cure their disease and are from the underprivileged section of society. Host Rotarians will arrange admission, surgery and discharge from hospital.
Poor children suffering from congenital heart diseases (CHD) cannot afford costly life saving heart surgery and hence they are considered born to die. This community needs are identified during the CHD screening camps organised by NGOs and medical outreach camps of hospitals.
Kokilaben hospital was one of the first hospitals set up in India which offered specialized children heart surgery facilities. Therefore many children from all over the state of Maharashtra and even from other parts of India are referred to this hospital by other hospitals. Also doctors from this hospital who visit other hospitals also refer children who are suffering from CHD to this hospital. from CHD for treatment at Kokilaben hospital. Kokilaben hospital also conducts medical outreach camps where CHD children are also identified.
These referred children are given admission dates at Kokilaben hospital, get admitted, arranged heart surgery and sent back after recuperation to lead normal healthy quality life thereafter making them useful to their family and community.
Our club through this grant project will assist the district in identifying and funding the heart surgeries of some of these children who are from underprivileged background and whose families cannot afford the medical costs of a heart surgery .
This project has a budget of USD 50,000 which is proposed to be funded through a term gift of USD 30,000 from one of our club members, USD 10,000 contribution from our district and balance USD 10,000 matching contribution from TRF. Therefore we do not require any funds or monetary contributions from our international partner. However we do require their support in partnering us on paper for meeting the requirements of a global grant.
