Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Jamaica

Location: Kingston

Total Budget: $32,000

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

We will be providing the children of Trench Town with activities and tools to stimulate creative expression for mental healing. Through kids' workshops in illustration and storytelling the kids will create short comics and stories on role models of Trench Town that we will publish digitally for the world to see. This will be piloted at the Trench Town Reading centre which, through this project, will become a Reading and Innovation Centre. The project will include both infrastructural improvements as well as capacity building. Using a participatory approach, it will allow children to learn & express themselves combining creativity and mental healing. The birthplace of global greats such as Bob Marley & Peter Tosh Trench Town, Jamaica is an iconic location in world music and culture. Trench Town has however suffered 20 years of physical and mental bondage caught in the middle of a de facto civil war which tore the community apart with over 1,000 deaths between 1970s to 90s

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
