Kinoni Township is located in Rwampara, about 50km from Mbarara Municipality on the route to Kabale. Neighbouring areas include Katojo, Rukindo, Rwentondo, Bwenkoma, Rwarire, Nyamiyaga, Kitagata, Rwemigina, Nyakashambya, Kitooma, Kitagata, Kagando, Kibungo, Rwakishakizi, Kiyonga, Katukuru, Kagashe, & Karame. These are mainly residential areas with an approximate population of about 60,000. There are several cattle farms. There are several schools and other public and religious institutions. There is a Disabled School. A Health Center IV is located in Kinoni Township and there are other health centers scattered over the area.
The areas have GFS, hand dug dams, running streams and harvested rain water as the alternative sources of water and these are neither reliable nor sufficient for the institutions and communities together with their animals. In some areas the boreholes have broken down. Construction of this project will provide clean water to over 60,000 people to safeguard them from water borne diseases.
The existing main piped water system (3" HDPE Pipe) from Mbarara Municipality stops in Ruti 4km from Mbarara, has a pressure of about 1.5bars which is not sufficient for the water to be extended any further.
The water consumption is estimated at an average of 2,000,000 L/day and a maximum of 3,000,000 L/day
The proposed project is to consist of a water mains extension from the Main Mbarara Municipality Reservoir. There is required to be a booster station and a reservoir tank at Bwenkoma Hill which is the highest point from where water will be distributed. This land will be donated by the Katatumba Academy. The Rotary Club of Rwampara and RCC to be established throughout the region will work with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to implement this project.
Implementation will be about 12 months.
The project is estimated to cost UShs. 600,000,000. (US$ 300,000)
