Country: Croatia

Location: Ladimirevci

Total Budget: $48,334

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

The complete project title: Better at reading, better at writing and even better at speaking / shorten: Speech Therapy

The overall objective of the project is the prevention of disorder and difficulty in communication, language, speech, voice, reading, writing and/ or math skills in children of preschool and early school age who live in the area of Osijek-Baranja County, area Ladimirevci, Town of Valpovo and Belišće.

Indtroduction of speech therapy into SOS Children`s Village Ladimirevci would help us to better address speech therapy problems in a familiar, emotionally secure environment for children. In addition, families living in Ladimirevci and under jurisdiction of the Social Welfare Center Valpovo would also be able to use the speech therapy services, often unvailable to many children, because parents cannot take the children to the specialist polyclinic in Osijek or pay for private speech therapy sessions.

Preschool age for most speech language difficulties do not tolerate deviations development, the base of the mother tongue was adopted and, therefore, the difficulties do not notice or ignored at this age, stayed adopted for a lifetime. Also, if there is less or greater deviations of knowledge and mastery of skills compared to childern of the same age, with increasing demands which brings primary school system in many cases the discrepancy is becoming more and more important. In addition, failure to master in knowledge in a certain area causing failure to master knowledge in the master area which include certain previously acquired knowledge. With each higher class progressively growing number of areas of knowledge and skills that are expected and the deficit becomes almost insurmountable. Therefore the aim of timely reaction and elimination of primary problems prevent the occurrence of secondary problems.

By preventing, detecting, testing, treating the problems and counseling, speech therapy actively helps children with communication difficulties, speech and language impediments, prepares them for the first grade, helps them if they have problems with the acquisition of reading and writing skills and or if they have specific reading and writing difficulties.

The long term goal is raising awareness and educating parents and the general population about the importance and necessity of work with the child in a family environment and before they start school, reduce the number of children for which the only option therapeutic effects.

Engaged expert therapist - speech therapist will share their knowledge of everyday communication and cooperation but also through education aimed at increasing the expertise of the teachers of kindergartens and elementary school teachers on recognition of the disorder in the field of speech- language communication, and increase parents` knowledge and SOS mothers on early indicators disorders in speech and language communication that should be paid attention to and seek professional help.
