Project Description

Region: Eastern Europe

Country: Croatia

Location: Glina

Total Budget: $111,465

Area of Focus: Community economic development

The city and Glina area have been seriously affected and partially depopulated during 1991-1995 war in Croatia, followed by the poor economy and lack of prospects for the youth. Based on the initiative from local community, Rotary of Croatia has envisioned, with this project, a way to help this community building a sustainable educational path to the market competitive skills and better future for them.

This project has the following goals:

•Teach in market competitive skills young generations of this area - electrical engineering, IT skills and programming in applied Robotics

•Include and open these youngsters to their peers via participation in existing regional, state and International championships in robotics

•Ensure sustainability through communication and interaction with community as well as joint activities between elementary and high school sections to enable smooth succession

•Provide value to the community and the source of long term self-financing- EE repair workshop, IT support to local family owned businesses and eco-farming with websites and access to EU funding guidelines, robotics skills as a foundation for startups aiming at global market

The program is designed to support students in their educational and professional growth through providing them with quality teaching which focuses on skills and practices that enable lifelong learning and independent problem-solving in market valuable skillsets. The school will provide our students with the necessary equipment, training and technical support in their work, and the students will use their acquired knowledge and skills to lead the work for the benefit of local community.

In this way we will shift the focus of instruction from the teacher to the student and develop student-centered learning. Such learning aims to develop learner autonomy and independence by putting responsibility for the learning path in the hands of students. Having developed self-esteem to work and to make new ideas, we expect students to create their own projects in the future with the knowledge and skills in to support economic and community development.

There will be positive economic implications for students and future citizens as a result of their enhanced ability to excel in their careers, and use the internet to help local community. Their professional capacities will be improved by using devices and tools provided by the project, which will undoubtedly result with self-confidence and an existing will to succeed.

That knowledge and energy will ultimately be channeled to their future workplaces, in existing or new businesses, brining prosperity to the local community.

Project will take place from 01/05/2016 until 01/06/2017.

This project is the perfect match to many initiatives of the local community that could have not been completed due to the lack of available funding and government support at the local level.

The High School Glina school officials have organized themselves as well as the most active local officials, associations, businesses and individuals to deliver a vision supported with a detailed list of the necessary equipment, training and work which needs to be performed.

Rotary has supplemented this activity with information, ideas and support for sustainability and activities aligned with our vision of support that makes a long-lasting impact and benefit to the local community.

These local resources will also participate using their own resources in any possible way to ensure the successful implementation of the project, reaching out to all associations and institutions in the area to contribute as well.

Rotary Club Zagreb is the project lead, that will appoint Project committee.

The Club will have responsibilities as follows:

- controlling implementation of the project according to a defined timetable

- controlling equipment procurement

- controlling the quality of teacher training

- controlling the viability of the project

Rotary club Sisak will provide close local support and activity oversight and support on ongoing basis. Rotaract Club Zagreb will participate in all on-site activities.

Rotarian families will support meetings and events in different cities. Both clubs will provide help in project activities, as well in promoting the project in local community.
