Proposal Form

This is an intervention program designed to lower the obesity in children aged between 6-11 years in two large cities of Ecuador--Guayaquil and Machala. It also promotes the practice of exercise and healthy nutritional habits. Because of high incidence of diabetes and other health issues related to overweight, the overall goal of this Global Grant is to improve the health condition of elementary and middle school students. Specific objectives are to research the incidence of obesity, change the nutritional culture of a high cholesterol diet into a more healthy selection of food items, and to exercise regularly, offering various sports options.

The program will take place in two large coastal cities of Ecuador, Guayaquil and Machala, with the beginning of the school year in June 2016. Each city will target schools and invite 1000 students, 6-11 years old, to participate. Procedures will include anthropometry, clinical history, and physical exams on admission and at the end of the school year. A psychological test will b performed and a follow-up with a Sports Specialist will include 150 minutes of exercise per week in their daily activities. A full-time professional health instructor will be included at each school. At the end of the school year, a new anthropometry evaluation will be performed to compare the results after the intervention.

The Primary Host Club contact will be Dr. Fernando Aguirre who is also the head of the Cardiology Association of Ecuador. Playing a key role with this health project is Machala Moderno Rotary and in particular Governor-Elect Fressia Abad, a member of the club. David Ballesteros, La Mesa Sunrise Rotary will be the International Club Primary contact who recently visited the target area. The present project was declined last year by the Rotary Int. Authorityes, so, we use the donatión received on Ecuador, to complete the 2016 comittmend of the program.

Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
