Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Nigeria

Location: Offa

Total Budget: $35,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health

Lamodi is a Small Community in Offa Local Government area of Kwara State, North Central of Nigeria with geographical coordinates of 8'9N 4'43E and has a population of 90,000 inhabitants. The Community is one of the backward communities in the region. The community has a Health Center where patients, nurses and the people do not have access to clean water for taking care of sick people and drinking and have therefore been using water from a nearby stream that is unsafe. This health center is the only one located in the community and Patients from neighboring villages like Adeleke, Oyun, Ijagbo, Ipee, Igbotele, Igosun, Ojoku etc also come to the health center for treatment, delivery and all other kind of medical assistance. Diseases from this unsafe water kill more people every year and the women and children are the most affected as their bodies are not strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, typhoid and other water related diseases Rotary Club of Ilorin is planning to drill a borehole in the health center and also donate medical equipments. During an assessment that was conducted recently, we learnt that the health facilities has no access to clean and safe drinking water and the facility has maternity unit that requires running water. The nurses and the mothers who come to access services within the health center has to trek 1-4km to access water from the stream and also many important medical equipment is lacking in the health center and this has caused the death of many people, hence when this project is supported will be able to promote hygiene in the health center, reduce child mortality, reduce chances of Transmission of HIV from Mother to child because the nurses will save time used to fetch water and concentrate in giving service to the patients.

The Purpose of this project is to provide clean and safe water for the patients and people living around the community health center and also donate some medical equipment.

BENEFIT/ RESULT

1. Eradication of typhoid fever, cholera, diarrhea and other water related diseases

2. Nurses will have more time to concentrate on patients as against trekking 1-4 Kilometers to get water

3. The toilet will be clean because there will be enough water to take care of it after use by patients and this will reduce the spread of diseases.

4. Sick people will benefit from the medical equipment lacking in the Health Center and many lives will be saved.

5. Reduction in Stomach and gastrointestinal illness caused by drinking unsafe water

6. Women will be able to take time to take care of their children and family as against trekking some miles in search of water.

7. Children can now concentrate on their studies instead of trekking some miles in search of water.

8. Availability of the needed Medical equipment will reduce death and mortality rate generally because patients will be attended to with the necessary equipment.
