Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Klerksdorp

Total Budget: $35,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

The objective of this Global Grant Project is to equip a hostel to provide accommodation to students (aged 13 to 18) who would otherwise, because of financial constraints, not be able to attend the Schoonspruit High School.

The school serves a geographical area with radius 200 km (125 miles).

Direct beneficiaries of this project will be 20 to 30 under privileged students per year, ad infinitum.

Sustainability : The primary need in this community is further (higher) education. There are many Primary Schools (students aged 5 to 12) in the region but very few Secondary Schools (students aged 13 to 18) accessible to under privileged students who can't afford transport costs. This need was identified through thorough target area and market research done by the Governing Body and personnel of Schoonspruit High School. Unfortunately the budget of the South African Department of Education does not support infrastructure development at South African Schools. Members of the local community are intensely involved in the planning of the project. The project aligns with current ongoing initiatives through the active parents and Governing Body of the Schoonspruit High School, which have launched many fundraising projects and have acquired a suitable building to convert into a hostel.

The current infrastructure, administrative capacity and management structures of Schoonspruit High School bodes well for the sustainability of the project. Anticipated Start and end Dates: 01 May 2016 to 15 December 2016. Rotarians will be involved in the selection of the budget items and their business acumen and facilitation will be used to choose suitable suppliers. Rotarians will also be hands-on with the installation of equipment, painting and other renovation work to save costs.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
