The mission of the Power of Soap Global Grant Project is to reduce diarrheal disease and mortality among children through micro-enterprise solutions that also empower women in Nairobi, Kenya's Kibera Slum. Local women who participate in the program are empowered to become entrepreneurs by starting their own micro-enterprises selling a liquid soap that is produced locally by Power of Hope Kibera. With each soap sale, sellers conduct a brief face-to-face behavior-change intervention to promote handwashing with soap at the key times that are proven to reduce diarrhea.
Members of the Boulder Rotary Club will be traveling on a Vocational Training Team to implement the project in collaboration with local Rotarians from the Club of Kilimani Alfajiri in May-August 2016. Project funds will be used to create soap, conduct training for the local soap sellers, and conduct monitoring and evaluation.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
