Service Project Proposal

Feminine Hygiene

Under Disease Prevention and Treatment, following the theme Rotary serving Humanity

Rotary Club of Poona, Inspira

Goal of the Project: To tackle the problem of sanitary napkin disposal in Pune district by installing incinerators.

Why is this needed: Currently the sanitary napkins are mixed with regular waste from societies, public places and it's difficult to segregate them and dispose them off. This exposes these viral borne waste to the environment, animals and public at large causing diseases like Hepatitis B and C. It exposes waste pickers to disease-causing microorganisms E coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, HIV and pathogens that cause hepatitis and tetanus. Incinerating these napkins is the only way of getting rid of this menace.

Where to install and who will benefit: Individual and Large unit options available can be installed at Schools, Colleges, Ladies Hostel, Hotels, Railway Station, Air Ports, Bus Stops, Public Toilets and individual homes.

Every single unit of incinerator will directly benefit between 10 to 50 users per day based on the type and capacity of the incinerator, not to count the benefits to environment and society. This will also save the waste pickers from the in-human task of segregating this waste at various stages of the waste cycle. The cost of the incinerator varies from 3000 to Rs 40,000 based on the type and capacity. The table on the next page considers different types of incinerators at different sites, hence affects the cost that is assumed for calculations.

The project aims at installing 250 incinerator units across the district in the year 16-17

Cost of the Project: 60,000 USD
