Objectives of the project:
Hygienic disposal of sanitary napkins by the scientific method of incineration
To reduce spread of infection due to unhygienic disposal of sanitary napkins
To reduce environmental pollution due to non-biodegradable sanitary napkins
To reduce clogging of public drainage system due to spongy nature of napkins
To dispose 500,000 used sanitary napkins every year by incineration
Need of the project:
Pune city and suburbs have population of over 5 million. Survey conducted in 2014 indicated
that nearly 250,000 sanitary napkins are disposed, without segregation, into domestic waste in
the city every day. Soiled (used) sanitary napkins harbor pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria,
fungi & viruses and are infectious waste. Current method of disposal is land filling and flushing
them down the drain. Both the methods can spread harbor and spread infection. Sanitary
napkins used here are not easily biodegradable. In drainage system, the napkins swell and
block pipes.
A safe, hygienic, scientific & quick method of disposal of sanitary napkins is to incinerate them
at relatively low temperature to harmless ash, without generating harmful emissions.
Scope of the project:
1. Number of Incinerator to be installed: 18, of capacity of 200 napkins per day
3. Number of girl students served: 9,300
4. Number of napkins incinerated: 46,500 napkins / month i.e. around 500,000 napkins / year
Beneficiaries of the project: Direct: Number of girl students benefitted: 9,300
Indirect: Community around the institutions
Partner/s in the project : Educational institutes and hostels listed above
Schedule of Execution:
Project implementation will start in September 2016 and will be completed by February 2017.
Club members are involved as a project committee to decide the vendor, select the institutionsand to make MOU with them, execution and visiting the site of installation in every 3 months to note the operation of the incinerators.
