Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Pune

Total Budget: $40,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Project is intended for perpetually drought stricken area of Kumboshi village and surrounding areas in Pune District. Village and its surrounding areas with a population of 5000 are facing severe water shortages for the past many years. Main water reservoir of the area is badly silted and dam's lock gates/storm valves are corroded and damaged. The project will take up removal of silt, thus increasing its water storage capacity. Also repair the damaged gates and open the storm water drains. Increased water levels will increase the underground water table and thus charge the wells in surrounding housing areas. Reservoir area is approximately 600,000 sq.ft. Silt removal will be done with excavators, bulldozers and forklifts. Timeline for the project will be 6-8 months depending on availability of equipment.

Total expenditure of the project is expected to be US$ 40,000/- Our Rotary Club and other participating Clubs,if any, will contribute US$ 10,000/- and will need global grant funding of US$ 30,000/-. Funds will be required for hiring of heavy equipment for dredging, disposal of silt, repairs of broken lock gates/valves, technical consultancy etc.

Club will form a special purpose project committee with President, Service Projector Director and 3-4 other members to carry out and supervise the project. Club will also form Rotary Community Corps (RCC) for local help daily reporting.
