Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: 21 Villages in No.Kenya

Total Budget: $106,650

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

The main objective of this grant is to build peace in 21 villages in No. Kenya, which have suffered from years with inter-ethnic conflict and violence. The new method here is designed to bring peace in these conflict ridden areas by using children and their parents as the primary peace building agents, rather than village elders an officials who have not be successful.

This new model has been developed and refine by a collaboration of Rotary clubs and Districts with the Children's Peace Initiative-Kenya over a 5 year period and uses paired rural/pastoral communities that have a long history of conflict between them. The basic stages and budget costs include 5 day training Teachers Trainers, 4 day Children's Peace Camps, 3 day Child-Family Pairing events, 3 day Conflict and Peace trainings for parents, 8 day Peace Exchange Holiday programs, Training in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Conflict methods, and Consultation with the CPI staff after the funds have been spent to repair, restore, an expand the conflict resolution skills and activities.

The project will begin in the Fall of 2016 and last for 2 years. Rotarian involvement includes preparation of the plan, training modules, and budget, handling the grant funds,

visiting the projects, informing the children, parents, and teachers about Rotary, assisting the CPI staff, a friendship exchange to Kenya, and work on the Monitoring, Sustainability and Evaluation of the project. The $11,960 contributed by the Tucson Rotary Club is matched and given as DDF.

February 3, 2022 UPDATE. The project has been underway for several years now with very successful results. It is expected to finally end in the latter part of 2022. The reports are current and there is a lot of activity ongoing and scheduled for the Spring of 2022. The Millimani RC in Kenya is actively following and monitoring the progress and club members have visited the project.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
