Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Kerala, Cochin

Total Budget: $38,601

Area of Focus: Community economic development

We have many Visually Challenged people who find it very difficult to lead a dignified life in India.

India has the second highest percentage of blind people in the world. Every 3rd blind person in the world is an Indian. There are nearly 45 million Indians who are visually impaired, of whom 80% can be cured as Cataract is the largest contributor to avoidable blindness amongst the elderly, especially the elderly poor & illiterate living in the rural countryside having little or no access to medical aid.

Rotary Club of Cochin Global (RCG) operates a state of the art computer centre (RCG-Surya) in Infopark, Cochin which trains the visually challenged in computers, mobility and communicative English. With these three skill sets, they are able to commute to their work place independently and perform any sedentary job such as those involved with back office, call centre, telemarketing, customer service etc. We have successfully trained and placed 80 students till now and this centre is in operation for the last 5 years.

This is an ongoing project where in there is requirement for funds for upgrading the Computers and software which are 6 years old and also the administration expenses for one year.

Our club members will ensure that effective functioning of the centre and the funds are utilised diligently. Our members and Anns are regularly visiting the Finishing School where in adequate directions are given from time to time. We currently run the facility with sponsors from the club and from outside sponsors.
