Project Description

Region: South-East Asia

Country: India

Location: Cochin

Total Budget: $66,750

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The full project name is Happy Village Project-Provision of Toilets at Perambulam. The project would build toilets or toilet blocks over an 18 month period for 80 to 100 homes on the island of Perambulam, located on a lake near Cochin, India. Members of the Rotary Club of Cochin have identified Perambulum as an area in which sanitation facilities are sorely lacking and have established an active RCC on the island to help address the problem. Providing clean water and preventing disease are consistent with Rotary's areas of focus and we would look forward to partnering with The Rotary Club of Cochin to achieve project goals. We anticipate that Rotary Club of La Jolla members, in addition to contributing funds and reviewing project plans, will have an opportunity to visit the site and assist where needed.

Over 60 of the 80 toilets have been completed. The project is on track and is expected to be completed by the first week of January 2018. Once the 80 toilets are built, it will be ensured that a water source is available for each of the toilets and if after provision of water tanks and connections there are surplus funds, these would be used for the construction of additional toilets.

The project has been completed. A total of 87 toilets have been constructed. The additional 7 toilets have been made possible with the efficiencies in project management and negotiation with vendors. The final report of the project has been submitted and authorized at our end as Host club members. It needs to be authorized by the members of the International Partner Club ie La Jolla. We are on track to submit the grant reports to the Rotary South Asia Office in Delhi.
