Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health
There are no facilities for blood components preparation and storage in this part of our district.Blood may be used more effectively if component therapy is practiced. One unit of donated blood may be divided into components ,including red cell concentrates, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitates and platelet concentrates,to meet the needs of more than one patient. An added advantage is that the recipient can be treated with only those components that are lacking, reducing the adverse transfusion reactions.Besides ,since most of these components have a long shelf life, they will be readily available when an emergency occures.Patients have to travel for four hours to bring blood components from the nearest blood bank. There are five major hospitals in this region. They have to manage about 5000 maternity cases as well as plenty of Road Traffic Accident cases in addition to routine Gynaecological and surgical cases per year.If blood components are available these patients can be better managed ,thereby saving so many precious lives.Being a Gynaecologist I have lots of personal experience managing patients who needed urgent blood transfusions.
Project funds will be used for providing equipments to KVM Hospital, Cherthala where there is a functioning blood bank for whole blood. They are ready to provide necessary infrastructure including the service of experts and technical persons to manage and operate blood bank. And also they are ready to help poor needy patients.
Club members will contribute one fourth of the total project funding

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
