Khokana is a small Newari village about 9 kilometres from the capital city of Kathmandu. The community of about 7,000 inhabitants consists primarily of farmers and artisans. Traditional practices still play a significant part in the life of the inhabitants. The devastating earthquakes in 2015 caused large-scale damage, many injuries and loss of life. Of the 900 households in the village, about 550 home were completely destroyed and 307 homes were partially damaged. The task of rebuilding the community is enormous and requires additional investment for most families.
The objective of this grant is to equip women in the community of Khokana with income-generating skills, that will contribute to empowering the community to rebuild and overcome the disaster. The indirect benefit from the extra income will be to lessen the risk of children dropping out of school to support household and income-generating activities. The Rotary Club of Patan has already secured most of the funds to submit a Global Grant application and has identified an international partner club in Canada. However we still short of about US$3800 in International club contributions that would be matched by a US$3800 in International DDF contribution.
The beneficiaries of the grant would be about 150 women and their families. The indirect beneficiaries would be the Khokana Women Awareness Society (KWAS) to carry out more training and social service for the community in the future.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
