Project Description Region: Asia Country: India Location: Maharashtra State Total Budget: $35,000 Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development GLOBAL GRANT PROPOSAL WATER CONSERVATION PROJECT IN DROUGHT STRICKEN MADANWADI & 5 VILLAGES NEAR PUNE FOCUS AREA: This is a large scale water conservation project with focus on agricultural irrigation and drinking water in drought stricken Madanwadi & other villages in Bhigwan taluka, 100 km from Pune City. This area receives only 10 inches of rain per annum. The project provides rain water storage and percolation through desilting/deepening of existing stream/river beds with existing check dams. PROJECT NEED: The aim of this Rotary project is to provide drinking water, water for cattle fodder & agricultural irrigation facilities throughout the year for Madanwadi and other villages (Nimbodi, Bhigwan, Takrarwadi, Pimpale, Siddeshwar) near Pune. This project will fund renting of excavation equipment for the desilting and deepening of existing stream beds (24 pits each about 100m long, 20m wide and 2m deep). Existing check dams will ensure the stored water will not flow away but percolate into the ground. Providing deeper storage facilities will increase water percolation raise the water table of about 150 wells and numerous borewells in the vicinity. About 8000 acres of agricultural land in the area will benefit from this project benefitting 23,000 villagers. This will enable villagers to have water for drinking purposes, cattle fodder and agriculture (irrigation) year round and hence raise the local economy (multiple crops per year) and reduce migration to the urban areas. The local beneficiaries will be involved in the construction (labour) and ongoing maintenance, with all rental equipment of excavators, dump trucks/tractors & construction expertise provided by Rotary. The project execution will be managed by Rotary & beneficiary families involved in maintenance & sustenance. Projected life of the project is 20+ years.
