Project Description

Region: Eastern Europe

Country: Turkey

Location: Istanbul

Total Budget: $41,890

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

The objective of this global grant is to supply medical device called brachytherapy applicators to radiation oncology unit of Dr. Lutfi KirdarKartal Education and Research Hospital. This unit serves around 3000 oncology patients per year and is a community hospital basically providing oncological treatment to poor people.

Brachytherapy is a specialized form of radiation treatment and is very effective in certain cases where there is no other treatment option or available methods other than this modality create major complications. However brachytherapy is not available in all oncology centers, and it is a both operator and machine (applicator) dependent treatment. The applicators which will be obtained by this grant will be used for treatment of these patients who cannot have access to this treatment.

Who will benefit from this global grant? Provide the estimated number of direct beneficiaries.

Although brachytherapy is a standard treatment in gynecologic cancers and most centers including our center performing brachytherapy have the applicators only for gynecologic cancer treatment. However brachytherapy can be performed for certain other tumors like esophageal, bronchial, biliary tract and skin. The aim of this grant is to obtain these applicators in order to treat the suitable patients with high success and fewer complications with respect to available radiation treatment modalities.

It is estimated that these applicators will be used on 250 new patients per year. These applicators are used only in a few specialized centers around the world, and they don't exist actually in Turkey. The target patient population is all the suitable patients especially undertreated and underserved people of our community who cannot afford these kinds of treatments.

This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
