Lebanon is hosting around 1.5 Syrian refugees, 55% of which are children, living mainly within its rural communities. While refugees do receive some assistance from the Lebanese Government and international organizations for life saving medical treatment, dental care is not covered. The main two challenges for the refugees is cost as well as accessibility to dental care as many live in villages where dental clinics are not available. This is resulting in very poor dental health among the refugees and in particular refugee children. Refugee children who have suffered displacement from their homes in war conditions have to also tolerate in their asylum the intense pains that can be caused by dental problems and cannot receive treatment to relief that pain.
The Mobile Dental Project aims to provide free urgent dental care services to refugee and host community children who are unable to access dental care. The project will also provide preventative care through raising awareness among the children; teaching them how to brush their teeth, and providing them with a kit of dental supplies.
Implementation:
Rotary Club of Aley will be providing the mobile dental vehicle with all its equipment. The School of Dentistry at the University of St. Joseph will operate the mobile dental clinic and provide the medical personnel.
The visits to the villages will be closely coordinated by the Rotarians with the school and municipality or active NGOs in that village. its a ongoing project.
Beneficiaries:
Refugee and host community children in Mount Lebanon.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
