Project Description

Region: South-East Asia

Country: India

Location: Delhi

Total Budget: $194,281

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Community economic development

Hemodialysis is the most popular form of Renal replacement therapy the world over. India gets 1.50 million patients with kidney failures every year and a majority of them die within 5 years due to the acute shortage of dialysis units in the country.

Less than 10% of the patients requiring dialysis are able to avail the facility, while only half of them are able to afford it on long term basis, due to cost, time & logistical factors. Currently, about 800,000 patients with terminal renal diseases in India require dialysis & transplantation. But only 4000 patients are getting kidney transplantation and an equal number are on maintenance haemo dialysis. Haemodialysis treatment is very expensive. A patient normally receives dialysis treatment at least thrice a week and monthly expenses amount to INR20000 (roughly US$325). The medicines are also equally costly and a majority of the patients are not able to afford the treatment. Adding to the problem, health insurance policies do not cover the cost of dialysis owing to the high cost.

It is also noted that India has about 55 million diabetic patients and the no. is likely to touch 70 million by the year 2025. Every third patient suffering from Diabetes Mellitus develops chronic kidney disease. Hypertension and Diabetes is known to be the main cause of Renal failure.

We propose to set up Dialysis center consisting of 15 Dialysis machines in Ashok Vihar, a densely populated catchment area of Delhi NCR (National Capital Region) consisting of more than 20 million people. 50% patients will be served Free of Cost and balance Semi paid.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
