Background
Rotary District 3140 has built several Rain Check Dams along with Larsen & Toubro Ltd., over the past 10 years in villages near Dahanu, Palghar and Talasari areas, about 100 kms north of Mumbai to help villages retain water in streams post monsoon. However due to irregular monsoon over the past few years, it is observed that bore wells and hand pumps are running dry by end of February . This year, all Rotary Clubs in the District have decided to focus on water retention and recharging existing water resources.
Project Objectives
Rotary Club of Bombay Juhu Beach (RCBJB) has identified Patilpada Village comprising of 101 families, 780 residents, situated in Varwada Gram Panchayat near Talasari in Palghar District about 115kms north of the city of Mumbai, as its focus for implementing the following water management initiatives:
1) Repairing, Desilting & Construction of rain check dams
2) Recharging existing open wells & bore wells
3) Providing water storage, distribution & filtration system
4) Constructing soak pits for kitchen waste (1 per family)
5) Repairing of Existing Toilet Blocks in School
Given below are the details of the project objectives.
Existing Infrastructure - Proposed additional repairs or refurbishing
Existing Infrastructure Nos Proposal
Large Wells 2 No action required
Small Wells 3 Need to be cleaned /recharged
Hand pumps 3 To be repaired
Rain Check Dams 2 Desilting to be done
Toilet Block in School 4 Repairs & refurbishment
Additional Facilities Proposed
Rain Check Dam 1 To be constructed
Solar Water System 1 Complete Pumping, Storage and Distribution System
Soak Pits 101 To be constructed (1 per family)
Filtration System 1 Ultra Purification System
Benefits to the villagers & Areas of Focus
1) Repairing, Desilting & Construction of rain check dams
Construction of a Rain Check Dam between two existing ones and de-silting the existing ones would ensure enough water retention in the troughs near the Check Dams to facilitate farmers in cultivating a second crop (vegetables) - post monsoon.
Construction of small bunds and stone walled barriers will ensure that more running water in the water shed area percolates in the ground thus increasing the ground water table of the surrounding areas.
Adequate water for farming and enable irrigation of about 35 acres of land in which a second crop can be cultivated thereby providing an additional income of about Rs. 350000/ per annum to about 25 families having farms abutting the stream.
Adequate water for farm animals till the month of March of the following year instead of December (additional 3-4 months period) in de-silted water troughs near the Rain Check dams.
Availability of adequate water throughout the year would help in cultivation of second crop post monsoon, providing them additional income and thus preventing migration to urban areas.
Area of Focus - Water & Sanitation / Economic & Community Development
Timelines - Within 1 to 2 months of approval of Global Grant & fund disbursal (only during calendar months Feb-May when there is a dry spell)
2) Recharging existing open wells & bore wells
Cleaning of Village open wells, cleaning/ repairing existing bore wells & construction of small bunds / barriers in the water shed area will ensure increase in ground water table of the surrounding area which in turn help 101 families to have access to drinking water throughout the year.
Area of Focus - Water & Sanitation
Timelines - Within 1 to 2 months of approval of Global Grant & fund disbursal (only during calendar months Feb-May when there is a dry spell)
3) Providing water storage, distribution & filtration system
Providing a water pump, storage and distribution system with a gravitational filter will help women folk to have potable water at their door step without having to walk 700- 800 metres in hilly terrain to fetch water from the main village well.
Also, providing a ultra purification filtration system will ensure that the villagers get access to clean potable water which will considerably reduce water borne diseases.
Area of Focus - Water & Sanitation / Disease Prevention & Treatment
Timelines - Within 1 to 2 months of approval of Global Grant & fund disbursal (only post monsoon Nov-Feb)
4) Constructing soak pits for kitchen waste (1 per family)
Construction of Soak pits will enable hygienic conditions in the village and prevent mosquito breeding near stagnant water (which is the case in absence of disposal of kitchen waste)
Area of Focus - Water & Sanitation / Disease Prevention & Treatment
Timelines - Within 3 months of approval of Global Grant & fund disbursal (only post monsoon Nov-Feb)
5) Repairing of Existing Toilet Blocks in School
Repairing existing Toilet blocks in the village school will ensure good hygiene and better attendance of students specifically the girls.
Area of Focus - Water & Sanitation / Disease Prevention & Treatment
Timelines - Within 1-2 months of approval of Global Grant & fund disbursal (only post monsoon Nov-Feb)
