In 2014,Club Rotario Guatemala Norte built a low maintenance anaerobic sewage treatment plant in Joya Verde through a Global Grant. Joya Verde is an extreme poverty community localed near Guatemala City.
This project was requested by the people of the village as their most pressing need.
The project benefits around 1,000inhabitants.The treatment plant was built to sustain a 10-year population growth.
The construction of the plant was Phase 1 of a 2-phase project.
Phase 2 involves the construction of the secondary and tertiary sewage lines by the municipality that already built the main line, and the construction, through our Club,of 95 bathrooms for each existing house.
Our Club will work with the Municipality to coordinate the labor to be provided by Joya Verde dwellers in order to keep costs capped and to ensure a sense of ownership by the villagers, but we are still unable to afford its cost. Our Club is also procuring the donation and important discounts of construction materials.
Our Club chose to support the development of Joya Verde(JV),with the hope to then replicate this model in other communities. Our Club members have collaborated in the construction of the elementary school and in the implementation of reading, teaching ,nutrition, sanitation and values'programs through the years.
This project is very important for the sanitation of the community and to prevent the pollution of the freatic level and stomach diseases.
This phase 2 can be divided in 2 sub-phases, as the funding is obtained. Each module would involve the construction of approximately 32 bathrooms and their connections to the sewage lines. The execution would take 12-14 months to complete. The funds would be used to pay for the materials, skilled labour and the supervision of the construction. Our club members will be involved in the procurement of the construction materials, coordinating the supervision of the construction and coordinating with the Municipality the labour to be provided by the local villagers. The total cost of the project is $180,000 and we aim to start the first half of the project that amounts to $90,000 this year. The project is now part of Global Grant 1982818 already submitted for approval.
