The project involves the distribution of potable water to 506 individual homes, two elementary schools, a community learning center and two health centers in the rural communities of Cuajachillo 2 and Trinidad Central, near Managua, Nicaragua. Rotarians from the RC of Santa Barbara Sunrise have visited the communities four times over the past five years and met regularly with community groups to discuss their priority needs. Each time this water project was listed as the highest priority. Currently families must collect their water in barrels using ox or horse drawn carts. The Mayor of the region of Ciudad Sandino has drilled a new well and installed two large tanks at a high elevation to supply these communities. This project will pipe the water from the tanks down to each home. Once funded, the project is projected to take four months to complete.
The project funds will purchase the materials, pay for a backhoe and driver, provide supervisory personnel from the NGO, El Porvenir, cover the travel expenses of a contractor Rotarian to go from Santa Barbara, California, to Nicaragua to monitor the project, and provide training to community members on administering a Water Committee, and on hygiene and non-contamination of the water. Club members from the RC of Ciudad Sandino, the host club, have been handling the in-country planning of the project for many years, including meetings with the community and the Mayor of the region of Ciudad Sandino. Ten members of the RC of Santa Barbara Sunrise have visited the communities over four visits, have conducted community needs assessments and a focus group, have written the grant application, secured funding from other clubs and will visit the communities to celebrate the completion of the project.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

We are waiting for the final contribution to this project to be transferred to the TRF project account next week. We have been working with TRF's program officer on the funding arrangements in view of the recent restrictions placed on Nicaragua. We should be ready to begin the project at the beginning of January 2019.
