Rotary Club of Pune Central's Global Grant Project Proposal
Breast Cancer Awareness and Treatment
Need for the Project/Concept of the Project
Incidence of breast cancer is rising rapidly in India and it will soon become no. 1 cancer among females pushing cervical cancer to No. 2 position.. By 2015 the incidence will become more than 200,000 new cases per year. Even today, unfortunately, one in every 22 Indian women is likely to suffer from this disease in her lifetime. Although most cancers are difficult to cure and mortality rates are high, the very important fact about breast cancer is that the patient has 97% chance of survival if the cancer is detected in the first stage. If we can spread awareness about this cancer among women and their family members and encourage women to come forward for screening, there will be a good chance to catch the patients in the first stage and cure them.
Scope
Awareness Campaign
1. Video shooting of a local language comedy play with theme of cancer awareness, enacted by a most popular Marathi stage actor and his troupe will be done. Live shows of this play were held in the past and proved to be immensely popular. Video shows of DVDs of this play will be arranged free of cost at various low income group colonies, colleges for women, BPOs, factories etc.
2. A biweekly Question-Answer column of eminent oncologists will be published in high circulation Marathi and English language dailies
3. Monthly awareness programs for general practitioners/gynecologists will be conducted by eminent oncologists to create awareness about early detection, diagnosis and treatment
4. Weekly radio spots will be run on a local FM channel
5. Quarterly TV programs featuring eminent oncologists, breast cancer survivors will be broadcast
6. Periodic sales will be arranged in which garments, personal products, household products, accessories etc. will be sold with pink ribbon branding. Popular celebrities will be invited to provide added attraction
Treatment
Treatment will involve diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy as required by each case. Not every form of treatment may be required for each patient. We have already obtained commitment from some hospitals, surgeons, oncologists and drug companies for subsidizing treatment under our project. Free treatment will be provided to underprivileged female patients.
