Project Description

Region: North America

Country: Mexico

Location: Los Mochis

Total Budget: $35,789

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Project:

To give vision through treatment for avoidable blindness of the poor population of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Objective:

The present short term objective of the project is immediate implementation of eye screening outreach at different population to identify potential patients for Cataract. To operate 100 patients for Cataract.

Project Detail :

A survey of blindness and low vision in Los Mochis has found that nearly 15,400 people in the area have in immediate need of cataract surgery.

Initiated by the Ministry of Health, and supported by Sight Savers, the survey of adults aged 70 and above provides important data about the number of people in Los Mochis who are blind and visually impaired, and the causes of this.

As well as the 15,400 adults across the District who are in immediate need of cataract surgery, other important causes of blindness were glaucoma (a condition where the optic nerve is damaged, often by high pressure inside the eye), corneal scarring and poor procedures for cataract surgery.

For this Project we will need a total amount of 35,789 US Dlls. for the development of 100 cataract surgery in Los Mochis including hospital and incomes fees.

San Bernardino Sunset Rotary Club will be involved in a goodwills to accompished this Project.

• In Mexico, over 1,500,000 adults are blind and another 3,000,000 are visually impaired.

• 42 out of every 1000 adults aged 70 and above are blind.

Extrapolating the data from the survey to the total population, the prevalence of blindness in Mexico is estimated to be 0.78%.

A new survey of blindness and low vision in Los Mochis of adults aged 70 and above has found that nearly 15,400 adults are in immediate need of cataract surgery.

As in many developing countries, Mexico suffers from a lack of trained staff and equipment to enable the backlog of cataract operations to be reduced.

This data shows the need of eye care services in Los Mochis.

Project advances the goal of the area:

A team of 1 Certified Ophthalmology from Los Mochis and two RN Nurses of the 20/20 Ophthalmology Center with other rotarians from Los Mochis, have established contacts with communities, local radio and social media to organize eye screening for identifying potencial patients for cataract surgery.

20/20 Ophthalmology Center in Los Mochis is a full equipment Eye Hospital Certified by the Public Health System in Mexico, established in 2015 has perfom more than 1,500 eye surgery procedures including cataract, glaucoma and retina surgeries.

During four outreach mission to communities around Los Mochis, we have screened more than 50 patients for cataract surgery before the medical team from 20/20 Ophthalmology Center do another screening.

Implementation plan:

We will invite the potential patients for eye screened at pre announced locations through radio announcements, social media and sometimes advertisements in local newspapers. Ophthalmologist Dr. Jose Carlos Garcia Marquez and staff from 20/20 Opthalmology Center will start screening the patients.

Once the patients are identified, they are given selected dates to be prepared and operated for cataract surgery. Patients are called back next day for follow up. They are given eye shield protector and post operative medicines with all necessary instructions of after care.

Rotary Club play an important role in educating the people, particularly informing them about the services.

Vocational Training:

In reference to the observership to Medical Students and Nurses, we have planned to give observership to total ten Medical Students and ten Nurses. Rotary Club Los Mochis Valle del Fuerte will invite the applications for observership from Medical Students and Nurses through prior advertisement. They will select the candidates for observership. We will operate at 20/20 Ophthalmology Center. They will be allowed to help during the surgeries the last two months of their observership under the guidance of Dr. Jose Carlos Garcia Marquez and the Regiters Nurses from the Clinic.
