Need Assessment

Rotary Club of Nakuru-The Great Rift Valley is located in Nakuru town. The Needs Assessment document was developed in collaboration with the school Board of Governors including the Headmistress and School Development Committees. A site visit took place in March 2010 with a visiting Rotarian from the host club during the distribution of sanitary towels when the need was shared. The project will take place in Eldama Ravine Girls High School which is a Provincial Public girls boarding school situated at the heart of Eldama Ravine Town, the School population is over 500 these include: students, teaching and non teaching staff with their families. It is the best performing Girls school in the District and its performance is improving steadily since 2007 as shown in the table below.

YEAR CANDIDATES MEAN SCORE DISTRICT POSITION

2007 90 6.3000 3rd

2008 86 6.9882 2nd

2009 85 7.2588 1st

2010 90 7.6000 -

With these improving grades, the school is however undergoing a number of challenges. Key among them is Water Shortage. It's in this view that the school should have a borehole to solve this acute problem and as a result boosts the academic performance as well as the self esteem of a girl child. The school is therefore seeking assistance from well wishers towards addressing this chronic problem through sinking a borehole.

The following are the school needs for 2010-11 as stipulated in the Board of Governors meeting:

1.Sinking of borehole to address acute water shortage.

2.Painting classes of Southern Block

3.Replacement of fascia board and ceiling board for the southern tuition block

4.Repair and replacement of student desks and ICT Innovation.

Water & Sanitation

The project will enable the school and the surrounding community to access clean water. The borehole will further be drilled and fitted with a submersible pump powered by electricity with a 10 cubic meter water storage tank elevated to 12 m high to be supplied by gravity ensuring constant supply of water. The net result is to save and redeem a lot of time and avoid interference of school programs while fetching water from Perkerra river early in the morning, during breaks and after games as shown in the attached photos below. The school will improve academically; maintain high standards of cleanliness and personal hygiene which determines the self esteem of a girl child. The toilets will be supplied with sufficient water every day.

Basic education and literacy

Repair and replacement of desks, buying of books and ICT Innovation, painting of classes, replacement of fascia board and ceiling board for the southern blocks will go a long way in facilitating conducive learning environment. The ICT Innovation will enable the students to embrace technology in the 21st century.

Economic and community development.

The school will also use water for irrigation to grow food crops and the livestock will increase their productivity to supplement the parents' efforts in buying food for the girls. The school will sell water to the community around for sustainability of the project when the donor funds are expended.
