The Toy Libraries that are very common in the developed countries are not known in Turkey. The project aims to establish a pilot Toy Library in one of the central public libraries in Ankara region to build an example system which can be repeated in the other regions of the country by other Rotary Clubs or other NGO's.
Project Description
The Toy Library is planned to be established in the biggest Public Library (Adnan Ötüken Public Library) located at the center of the city. Initially a selected set of toys for different ages (5 to 12) will be supplied and will be available for lending.
The library will basically:
Lend toys to every registered member,
Organize regular meetings with parents and their children to play together,
Inform the people about the games and rules etc.
Develop the idea of "sharing" among children.
The required library space will be provided by the public library through the required permissions from the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry will also reserve at least two employees to care the library operations.
We will supply the qualified teachers from the Ankara University Department of Child Education and Development for the periodical training and meetings.
We will also develop a through interactive web site on which the users will be able to select the toys and reserve for lending.
The library will also accept toy donations and every donor's information will be attached to the toys so that the child that lends or plays with the toys will be able to learn the current education level of the person who was the original owner of the toy.
The names of the donors will live together with the toys forever. And this will promote more donations in time.
Population Involved
The public library has more than 600,000 books and around 20,000 books in their children's library section. The annual number of children visitors is around 15,000 for the library. Initially the Toy Library will attract at least 20% of those visitors. We expect that every year 3 to 5,000 children and families will use the toy library.
Rotarians Involved
All 25 members of the Rotary Club of Koru and 20 members of the Rotaract Club of Koru will be assigned different duties during the realization of the project covering but not limited to: Collecting the used toys from their neighbors, applying for free giveaway toys from the local or national toy manufacturers, separate the collected toys into different age groups, preparing the id cards for the collected toys and visiting the library periodically to follow the operations.
The project will be documented in detail and distributed to all other Rotary Clubs in the country so that they can establish their local toy libraries together with our assistance.
Rotary Benefits
The project will be published in major newspapers, magazines and TV's. It will greatly help building a positive image for the Rotary in the country. The rewards of this project will be seen not only on improving the living standards of those people but through the development of good relations with those people and gaining them as good citizens and Rotary Volunteers.
