There is a lack of milk in most human milk banks (HMB). Breast milk is the best source of protein. By using breast milk we can help prevent and treat allergies to cow's milk and prevent intestinal infections in infants. Approximately 10% of Brazilian infants are premature and all newborns that need hospitalization depend on the donation of human milk to ensure their full development. A bottle of breast milk can nourish up to 10 infants. With birth rates equalling those of infant mortality, it is imperative to develop actions to help solve this problem.

In Concordia/SC, the HMB implementation is already approved through the Law Project 14/2014 in the City Council, but so far resources raised by Rotary and its partners (Association of Breastfeeding of Concordia and Region - AMAR, Child's Pastoral, Women's Network to Combat Cancer, São Francisco Hospital). The São Francisco Hospital has already made available the rooms where the HMB will be implemented. The project will cover at least 500 children assisted in the first year of HMB implementation. Afterwards, it is intended to increase the number of assisted children up to 2,500 within five years.

The main objective of this project is the implementation of a HMB. Secondary objectives include the promotion of social campaigns to stimulate the donation of breast milk, other joint actions to improve the health of children, reduce infant mortality rates and reduce public expenditure.

To accomplish all these objectives, the actions to be developed involve instruction to parents inside the communities, promote campaigns to stimulate breastfeeding, as well as provide basic knowledge on health, education, nutrition and citizenship. Such actions will be publicized in both print and social media. The partners will help Rotary Club to monitor the donated and received milk and generate reports that will be kept in archives inside the HMB. Besides, they will help to map infant mortality data, being in direct contact with the Municipal Health Office, holding regular meetings and discussions with all staff. This Municipal Office will also be responsible to monitor the public expenditures on infant powder formulations.

With the implementation of the project, it will be possible to reduce the infant mortality and malnutrition rates of newborns by providing quality milk to infants and improving maternal and child health. Also, public resources previously spent with the acquisition of infant formulas and medicines will be spared. In addition, improvement in logistics and greater access to information are expected.

The total amount needed to implement the HMB is $ 50,000. We are searching opportunities to complete the budget with the help of Rotary Global Grants or individual people willing to contribute through the website http://www.matchinggrants.org/ in order to make this project feasible. To this budget, it is necessary the following needs: isothermal boxes, bins, containers, bottles for milk collection and storage; Furniture and office equipment for the reception room; Refrigerators, freezers, sterilizers, manual or electric suction pump; Baby cribs and furniture; Equipment and glassware for milk processing room; Marketing (folder, advertisement, banner), courses and Contingency.
