Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Paraguay

Location: Chaco Paraguayo

Total Budget: $106,571

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The Central Chaco of Paraguay is one of the areas with the least access to drinking water in the country. The main source generally comes from the accumulated rains in reservoirs. The fact of not having a safe source has a negative impact on the health of people, mainly young children.

In view of the need, the National Government is developing the Sanitation and Drinking Water Program for the Chaco where, from an aqueduct of 203 km. water from the Paraguay River will reach the area and will make it possible, for the first time, for more than 100,000 people to have fresh drinking water available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This project is focused on the indigenous population and the Mennonite population.

Following the guidelines of the areas of interest of Rotary International, in particular the Supply of Drinking Water and taking into account that there are populations of Paraguayans (non-indigenous and non-Mennonite) who live in the area and who will not be benefited by the project, RC Asunción Sur Ara Pyahu prepared a project that will allow access to the vital liquid of more than 900 people, providing the communities of Villa San Miguel and Primer Presidente distribution systems that will ensure the supply of potable water directly to homes, center of health and education centers.

In this area, where generally the available water is salty and where the annual rainfall level defines the availability, a project assured the families this resource throughout the year, it will have a transforming effect that will definitely make a difference for the life of these communities. Because drinking water is synonymous with health.

The project execution time is 6 months once the activities begin.

The contribution of the club members consists of: Detection of the area to be affected; preparation of the executive project and supervision of the work.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
