Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Santa Luzia do Itanhy

Total Budget: $46,796

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

The quality of literacy in municipalities such as Santa Luzia do Itanhy, located in the south of Sergipe, is alarming, with less than 10% of students reaching the fifth year of elementary school with desired performance. On the other hand, in the economic aspect Santa Luzia do Itanhy is one of the poorest in Brazil, with the majority of the population living below the poverty line and with an essentially welfare-minded, individualistic and short-term thinking mentality. SynapseBot's proposal is to contribute to address these problems through the implementation of a laboratory dedicated to the construction and programming of low cost robotic kits to support the literacy of elementary school students, with emphasis on Portuguese and Mathematics. The project integrates two social technologies developed by the Research Institute for Technology and Innovation (IPTI). Synapse is a literacy technology, totally built in partnership with Santa Luzia do Itanhy municipal school teachers and is currently being disseminated in 130 public schools in Sergipe. CLOC is a social technology of selection and training of young talents in programming, who also act as program instructors in schools, and who have recently begun to learn how to build and program low-cost robots to support literacy and aim to transform the results of this project into a commercial product to be incorporated into the portfolio of the IT company they are founding. The project will last 24 months, time required to complete the final version of the robot and the command application, to implement and program Portuguese and mathematics pedagogical activities for the first 3 years of elementary school, to concept and design the final version of the robot product and to validate the scalability model, reapplying the project in another 14 municipal schools, from 3 different municipalities in Sergipe. The requested financial resources will be used mainly in the acquisition of equipment and supplies for a robotics laboratory and also for the remuneration of the main instructors of the project, including air tickets and daily, once one of them lives in São Paulo. The members of the club will monitor the entire development of the project from the acquisition of equipment and supplies, the training of the team and the quantification of the results obtained through indicators of the increase in income and number of children served by the technology offered.
